Acceptable Use Policy

The usenet-addresses.mit.edu web site is intended for searching for the e-mail address of a specific, known person. Ordinarily, you would know the person's full name, and would enter that on the search form to check whether the person is listed in our database. If the person is not listed, we offer another search strategy that may also be effective in finding that person's e-mail address.

It is not acceptable to access this web site for the purpose of discovering e-mail addresses that do not belong to this specific, known person. Although search results will often include many addresses that do not belong to the person you are seeking, it is not acceptable to copy or download these addresses for some other use. For example, the addresses may not be used for bulk e-mail, regardless of whether you were intending to send the e-mail yourself, or whether you were intending to collect addresses to be used for bulk e-mail sent by someone else. The addresses may not be used for unsolicited e-mail advertisements, regardless of whether the advertisement is for a free product or service. The addresses may not be used to form or augment an e-mail address listing, database, or directory.

In addition, it is not acceptable to copy content from this web site for redistribution in any form elsewhere. This rules out putting any of the content online on some other computer system (regardless of whether you will be allowing free access), republishing any of it in written or printed form, or converting any of it to another media format (e.g., disk, tape, CD-ROM, etc.). Redistribution is prohibited for any part of either the static web pages (e.g., documentation found on this site) or the dynamically generated web pages (e.g., pages titled "Usenet Addresses Search Results" or "Usenet Addresses: Address Information").

It is also unacceptable to use this site as a source of addresses for unsolicited e-mail advertisements, even if you were to do so in a way that does not involve copying content. This rules out sending e-mail advertisements to addresses contained in the search results, whether you were to do so individually for each address, or by feeding a collection of addresses to a mailer.

Finally, it is not acceptable to make continual or automated queries to this web site. In accordance with the "Standard for Robot Exclusion", the usenet-addresses.mit.edu site disallows access by automated agents to any of its "cgi-bin" URLs. This means, for example, that it is not acceptable to run a program that sends a series of queries to our search form. Each individual search must be entered separately by a person. The policies about collecting addresses do, of course, still apply to searches that are entered by persons rather than automated programs. You may not download arbitrary addresses simply because you are typing your searches in by hand.

Access to usenet-addresses.mit.edu may be cut off, suspended, or modified in an arbitrary manner at any time, without prior warning, if a query pattern is detected that is not consistent with our usage policy. Access limitations will likely affect persons other than the person responsible for the apparent unacceptable use, particularly if those other persons are operating from the same IP address, a similar IP address, or a similar hostname. The maintainers of usenet-addresses.mit.edu reserve the right to report incidents of apparent unacceptable use to the Internet service provider responsible for the offending IP address, but are under no obligation to do so.
